Adoption Process

We understand that circumstances change, and sometimes pet owners need assistance with rehoming their beloved animals. That's why we offer free rehoming support for pets staying in the home. DCHS will help you get the word out, and help your pet find their new home.

Rehoming Support

Our surrender program operates on a case-by-case basis, dependent on space and resources available at any given time. While we strive to accommodate all owner surrenders, factors such as shelter capacity and the specific needs of the animal may impact our ability to help. As a no-kill shelter, we prioritize finding loving homes for every animal in our care, and for those we cannot accommodate, we provide guidance and referrals to alternative resources.

Pet Surrenders

We believe that every companion pet deserves consistent love, support, and compassionate care.

  1. Fill out an Adoption Application

Everyone who is interested in adopting one of our companion pets must first fill out the adoption application, which will ask a variety of questions about your household and lifestyle. Our team of Adoption Counselors review your application in an effort to find the perfect home for every shelter pet.

  2. Property Management & Landlord Approval

We have found one of the primary reasons that pets get returned to the shelter is due to changing landlord requirements, so our Adoption Counselors will reach out to your Property Manager and find out if there are any pet restrictions on your lease.

  3. Counseling Session with Adoption Counselor

The Adoption Counselor in charge of your application will call you for a phone counseling session to better understand your household and what you are looking for in a pet. Our Counselors have personal experience with every shelter pet will recommend pets that match your lifestyle.

  4. Adoption Counselor Schedules Meet & Greet

Our team will schedule your visit to the shelter to meet the dogs or cats! For dog adoptions, the team will also schedule a time for you to bring any other dogs living in the home for a carefully monitored introduction.

  5. Adoption Counselor Schedules Adoption Date

Once you have selected a pet that you want to adopt, your Adoption Counselor will schedule an official Adoption date.

  6. Live Happily-Ever-After with Your New Pet!

Got Mice?

Sometimes, DCHS takes in cats who have never been socialized by humans. Once they are spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated, we look for folks living outside of City of Menomonie limits with barns or suitable shelter. As these cats are not ready to be fully domesticated, they make excellent barn cats. We do require that any barn cat adopters agree to provide adequate shelter as well as the daily food and water all animals require.
